Project Alternatives

Floodwalls height would slowly decrease from the max heights shown. Floodwall lengths include an estimated 100 feet of downstream floodwall added to the upstream floodwall distances presented by the SCVWD. Click to table enlarge. Use browser back to return.
Six Pope-Chaucer Bridge replacement alternatives have been presented or discussed in public meetings. The San Francisquito creek channel at the Pope-Chaucer site, without any bridge, has about a 40-year flood capacity. Alternative 3 and 4 have the same capacity as removing the bridge, alternative 5.

The largest flood on the San Francisquito Creek in recorded history was on February 3, 1998. The flood flow was about a 40-year event, so alternatives 3, 4 and 5 would effectively protect from a occurrence of a similar flood. With the No Project alternative 6, a 1998-type flood would produce a similar flood to 1998.

All six alternatives can achieve 100-year flood protection in the future, but the No Project alternative, keeping the current 15-year bridge, would require very extensive and expensive upstream diversion and/or detention.
