SCVWD Adds "/or" to Floodwall Resolution

~50 pages of anti-floodwall emails, and one pro-floodwall email greeted the SCVWD's Board of Directors at the public hearing on Tuesday June 10th, in San Jose. Thanks to all that wrote. Very powerful.

As a result of the anti-floodwall e-mails, SCVWD staff modified the proposed resolution to read “and/or floodwalls” instead of “and floodwalls.” Staff said the addition of "/or" made clear that the SCVWD was not committed to floodwalls in a future 100-year project. A small symbolic victory!

During the public hearing, 3 or 4 Palo Alto and Menlo Park residents spoke in favor of removing “floodwalls” from the resolution and 3 or 4 Palo Alto residents spoke in support of the proposed flood protection project funding and budget modifications without expressing any support for a future 100-year floodwall alternative. After closing the public hearing and brief board comments, the funding and budget resolution with the “and/or floodwalls” text passed by a unanimous vote.

In their comments, all seven SCVWD board of directors members made a specific point of saying they understood that floodwalls are unpopular and encouraged all concerned residents to participate and express their opinions in the upstream of Highway 101 flood protection project DEIR (Draft Environmental Impact Report) public process later this year.
